Imagine a world without Filipinos

June 23, 2008

A very interesting and inspiring read.

Just click to enlarge

Muhammad Al-Maghrabi became handicapped and shut down his flower and gifts shop business in Jeddah after his Filipino workers insisted on leaving and returning home. He says: “When they left, I felt as if I had lost my arms. I was so sad that I lost my appetite.”

Al-Maghrabi then flew to Manila to look for two other Filipino workers to replace the ones who had left. Previously, he had tried workers of different nationalities but they did not impress him. “There is no comparison between Filipinos and others,” he says. Whenever I see Filipinos working in the Kingdom, I wonder what our life would be without them.

Saudi Arabia has the largest number of Filipino workers — 1,019,577 — outside the Philippines. In 2006 alone, the Kingdom recruited more than 223,000 workers from the Philippines and their numbers are still increasing. Filipinos not only play an important and effective role in the Kingdom, they also perform different jobs in countries across the world, including working as sailors. They are known for their professionalism and the quality of their work.

Nobody here can think of a life without Filipinos, who make up around 20 percent of the world’s seafarers. There are 1.2 million Filipino sailors.

So if Filipinos decided one day to stop working or go on strike for any reason, who would transport oil, food and heavy equipment across the world? We can only imagine the disaster that would happen.

What makes Filipinos unique is their ability to speak very good English and the technical training they receive in the early stages of their education. There are several specialized training institutes in the Philippines, including those specializing in engineering and road maintenance. This training background makes them highly competent in these vital areas.

When speaking about the Philippines, we should not forget Filipino nurses. They are some 23 percent of the world’s total number of nurses. The Philippines is home to over 190 accredited nursing colleges and institutes, from which some 9,000 nurses graduate each year. Many of them work abroad in countries such as the US, the UK, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Singapore.

Cathy Ann, a 35-year-old Filipino nurse who has been working in the Kingdom for the last five years and before that in Singapore, said she does not feel homesick abroad because “I am surrounded by my compatriots everywhere.” Ann thinks that early training allows Filipinos to excel in nursing and other vocations. She started learning this profession at the age of four as her aunt, a nurse, used to take her to hospital and ask her to watch the work. “She used to kiss me whenever I learned a new thing. At the age of 11, I could do a lot. I began doing things like measuring my grandfather’s blood pressure and giving my mother her insulin injections,” she said.

This type of early education system is lacking in the Kingdom. Many of our children reach the university stage without learning anything except boredom.

The Philippines, which you can barely see on the map, is a very effective country thanks to its people. It has the ability to influence the entire world economy.

We should pay respect to Filipino workers, not only by employing them but also by learning from their valuable experiences.

We should learn and educate our children on how to operate and maintain ships and oil tankers, as well as planning and nursing and how to achieve perfection in our work. This is a must so that we do not become like Muhammad Al-Maghrabi who lost his interest and appetite when Filipino workers left his flower shop.

We have to remember that we are very much dependent on the Filipinos around us. We could die a slow death if they chose to leave us.

Headshot Clinic Phnom Penh, Cambodia 06.07.08

June 6, 2008

Headshot Clinic Phnom Penh, Cambodia 06.07.08

The Idea
A persistence of random friends and peers wanting to have their portraits professionally taken by  Manila-based fashion photographer, Niccolo Cosme, so as to bask into the glory of having a  glamorized primary picture in their social network web sites. In the beginning, the notion was simply  over-the-top preposterous. However, with the cyber uprising of social/career network sites such as ramsey ramos in friendster.com, franco dionco in multiply.com, jivy yarza on facebook.com, Dan Neumeister on Naymz.com, Luwi on inkedin.com : one cannot deny the fact that these avenues foster  communication and fortify relationships exponentially that decades past could not have yet  accomplished.

The Registration.
Payment of $25 will be at the venue. You will be given a receipt and Headshot stub with your name, batch and number. Two free stubs for drinks will be attached too.

The Schedule.
Advance Headshot Clinic session will start at 6PM on a FIRST COME FIRST SERVE basis. Regular schedule and program starts 8PM.

The Looks.
Come in with your make up on and outfits. Resident Make up Artist- CINDY can do light make up for $5 per person. You may bring your own props or choose your looks and style for the night:

  • Corporate, Formal or Authoritative for the persona that dictates position, possession and power.
  • Gothic, Rockstar or Cutting Edge for the ego that shouts out rebellion, stereo typicality and self- strength.
  • Ethnic, Exotic or Traditional for the roots that signifies time, uniqueness and diversity.
  • Fancy, Extravagant or Elegance for self proclamation of fashion, trend and style.
  • Sporty/Athletic VS. Barely Dare for the drive of physical standouts in muscles and in flesh.

The Session.
5-minute time allotment per participant with 15 photo shoots. You will sign a photo/model release form. Photos will be given in a CD and one printed out to be scheduled in July.

Ally, My HP 520 Notebook

May 20, 2008

I just bought a 5-month old laptop i found at bongthom.com (which as of the posting is DOWN and unavailable). It’s a very popular portal here in Cambodia with packed information about the country. Jobs, Classifieds, Maps, Restaurants, Tourist Guide, Places To Stay. etc. Anyway, it’s been a week that I’m bongthom’ing the “classified” page for nothing. Jobs, IT/Computer and General are my favorite. Until last night, there’s this “Hewlett Packard Laptop for sale $300″ posting which i contacted immediately as i’ve thought is a best buy. Luckily and coincidently he’s Filipino, Born Again Christian - and living in Cavite as well (Dasmarinas that is). Small world huh? :-) Thanks to  Mr. Jun G. , I again have my own laptop to play and mess around with.

Ally, My HP 520 Notebook

It’s an HP 520 Notebook. I named it Ally, Maggie’s sister. Yes, i named my PSP Slim Maggie :P. MAGGIE , ALLY - Does it ring a bell ? haha… I got the name from my current company Mag Alliance.

It may not be a power-pc on the go like those 1k$ worth laptop we’ve been drooling for, but this one’s not bad for a base laptop to upgrade. Productivity-wise, it will sure help me a lot ;-)

If there’s something i did not do that i should have done before is this - BLOGGING about IT! (Yeah, the laptop).

You never know what you’ve got ’til it’s gone. When i lost bench (that’s my 2-week old Acer laptop which was stolen 45 minutes after i arrived Ho Chi Minh late July last year) only then than i realized its presence. Not that i take her for granted, but it was only that instance that i realized that i could have spent more time with it, and not just USING it. It may sound weird but yes, I kinda exploited Bench that time. When i was still in Cavite, almost EVERY little thing I buy, received, eat, picked, etc. I BLOGGED about it. Key chain, post card, gift wrapper, anything. But with Bench, that ACER thing - she received NONE. No photo nor a blog entry.

There you have it, my short and sweet welcome to Ally. It may not keep this laptop 100% safe from those crooked burglars, but with prayers and this post - it could at least give a good omen :D
